The Gay Chef

So, I illustrated this short fictional story for a literary magazine about a gay chef who built his fame and reputation and public persona around his gayness. When, in truth, he was actually straight - and he ends up falling in love with another woman (who ends up being a lesbian). Oh, what a world we live in!

As far as the two spot illustrations - my initial idea was the eggs and sausage/bacon, because i thought it was symbolic of the two different sexes. But the author really wanted the dish to be one of the ones mentioned in the story - so i ended up drawing lamb shank potatoes and string beans. I'm still a fan of my first drawing, but thats how things go sometimes.

I created this image for my friend (and artistic muse, haha) - John. He told me he wanted to start his own blog, so I was very excited to help him out a little by creating this header/logo image. He really is that muscular!!!!! :)

t shirt + tea towels

An Australian company (yes, i guess there has been an Australian theme going on with me recently) - contacted me a little while ago to produce a graphic for a line of t shirts as well as a series of tea towels. They saw the cupcake drawing I did a long time ago in my sketchbook section and asked for me to create 2 accompanying pieces. I forgot how much fun I had drawing food!

So, if you haven't figured it out by now, the bird is for the t-shirt and the recipes are for the tea towels! I will be sure to post a link when these are available for purchase.

Collaboration with Reed & Radar for 160grams

A little while back I posted up sketches of some "erotic flowers" that I was animating for a collaboration with Reed & Radar, a photographer/artist/fashion duo living in Brooklyn. Basically i was responsible for creating the flowers without previous knowledge of what the photographs were going to look like. So with my sketches in mind, they art directed the photoshoot.

I really loved the outcome, I think they edited the photos beautifully and the makeup/clothing is amazing! This is only an online magazine - so check it out HERE.

SPACE HELL

I was recently asked to contribute a piece to a themed show called SPACE HELL that is going to be at the L'Keg Gallery in Los Angeles. Although I've done space-related artwork for my dad before (an aerospace engineer) - I never really did space fantasy art, so I was pretty excited to give it a try. In the end I came up with a robo/mayan/alien from hell. Perhaps not a typical space fantasy piece...but what can I say?

In other news, mine and Ahu Sulker's newspaper EGG ON BREAD is almost near completion and hopefully will be sent off to the printers within a week. Thank you again to all of you who contributed and made this possible! I don't think you will be dissapointed with the outcome. I will make copies available via my online store once I receive them, so keep your eyes posted.

Serial Mom Fan Art

On a friend's recommendation I recently watched Serial Mom (a John Waters film) and absolutely loved it. Genius and hilarious.
Definitely rent it if you haven't seen it yet. I never usually do this - but I couldn't resist making a little fan art :)

Old Life Drawing Drawings

So I was looking through some of my older work from college and rediscovered my old life drawings. It made me realize how much I miss drawing from a nude model! Nothing teaches you more about drawing than drawing from life....and I miss it so much! So please anyone who is reading this and is living in the NYC area - if you know of good but cheap life drawing classes in NYC, let me know! I need to do more of this.

The top ink drawing is actually a master copy - not a life drawing (you probably could figure that out), but just thought I'd clarify :)

WFMU Record + Studio Pics

So, I posted this job a while back, but I finally got the finished product in the mail a couple days ago!! I'm very satisfied with how it printed. Not to mention listening to this record is so much fun - its a collection of "locked grooves," which are sound clips that repeat on themselves after a couple seconds. I definitely recommend this to anyone with a record player.

Also, I thought I'd show two pictures of my studio. It looks like a mess but its an organized mess! I like having a million things going on (as you can clearly tell).

Monster Show!

This is a poster I created for the guys at Puny Entertainment - they are hosting a halloween Monster Screenprint show and were nice enough to invite me to contribute. I should be getting my hands on several copies of this print, which I will make available for sale :)

I've been multi-tasking a number of different jobs recently...so soon I will be able to post up all the stuff I've been working on! You won't have to wait much longer.

AaaaaaeeeeEEEEEEIEEEEIEIEIEIIEIEIE!!!!!!!

Do you ever feel like you are losing your mind and any second you might become one of those drooling lunatics wearing diapers on the street? That is how I've been feeling recently, so its only appropriate I match this feeling up with this halloween poster blog entry.

This poster is for Pete's Candy Shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He came up with the idea for the scary puppy party, since we all know puppies aren't really scary (or maybe they are, but in an alternate universe in the 5th dimension). IRONY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME.

Perhaps I will go gouge out one of my eyeballs or maybe I'll socialize with the undead who've been hanging around the pool in my backyard. Or even better, I"ll go play with the BACKYARDIGANS!!!!

More work is coming, and hopefully, more sanity.

Amelia's Magazine + Efterklang Review

These three paintings were created for Amelia's Magazine on an article about Efterklang, a Danish band. I wasn't too familiar with their music beforehand, but after listening to it I decided that something more abstract would be appropriate. Their music is mostly atmospheric/electronic, with sounds that blend into each other. This is what I came up with, its an approach I never took before, but I really enjoyed it. I created these paintings with spray paint and then digitally added elements in Photoshop.

Check out the article here.

US Open Sketches

So, I'm a little late for the US Open - but I figured I'd post these anyways. These were drawn one fine day when I went with my brother and dad. Only after I agreed to going did I remember how I find tennis very boring after the first couple sets...but oh well, I got these sketches out of the deal. There were a lot of characters sitting around us - mainly the weirdo I documented below.

Newsweek Polksa

This past week I got the opportunity to work on a very exciting project for Newsweek Poland. I contacted them a couple weeks ago because my friend Liz offered to do any translating I might need. The art director responded and seemed interested but unsure since I didn't speak Polish myself. So time passes and then one morning (which began just like any other morning) I received an email ENTIRELY in Polish. I immediately forwarded it to Liz and she told me the basic gyst of the assignment and article. Basically I had 1 day to create one illustration (of any size and subject matter) for this feature article on the sexual revolution taking place in Poland.

I sent them the image of the man first, unsure if it was too racy, but they said they loved it! I was relieved and very excited (I don't think an American magazine would publish this? At least probably not the American Newsweek...). So anyways, I thought my job was done - but NO. The following day I receive another email entirely in Polish and I freak out and send it to Liz once again. Apparently they URGENTLY needed the man to become a woman - and the cross to be removed. I'm guessing they were scared of offending the church and possibly many of their readers - but I am still unsure why the man had to be changed into a woman.

Anyways, I did what I could with the time given - so the top image with the woman and the heart necklace is the final piece.
I'm very excited to see this one in print!

Blogs Blogs Blogs

I recently helped a friend design her blog so it looked as sexy as the name might imply. Check it out here.

AND, I decided to create a separate blog dedicated to my paintings. As I mentioned before, I'd like to start applying to galleries for shows and I thought it would be easiest to have all my paintings in one place. Take a looky-look!

Person I've Never Met, Conversation I've Never Had

This is my submission for No Brow's competition/project with the theme "Person I've Never Met, Conversation I've Never Had". I think its a pretty cool idea - they plan on selecting their favorite entries and publishing a book with a collection of these images. Elvis has been on my mind recently. Maybe its just because he's so sexy or perhaps its that velvet voice. Or maybe it was his unglamorous decline. Something about him is amazing to me. I would have liked to meet him and speak with him.
This is how I imagine the conversation would have gone (if it were a short, dramatic, and to the point conversation). Enjoy!

First attempt at animated GIF!!!!

Blogger doesn't seem to like animated GIFs - so click the link below to see my first attempt!
Best viewed on Firefox, Safari runs all choppy. Anyone with any advice on fixing that?

ELVIS OR SADDAM OR ZOMBIE MUSTACHIO?

Mania: An epidemic

So these two little buttons of delight were for a student run magazine called "Mania Magazine" (as you can clearly see from my cover illustration). The illustration with the text is for the front cover - and the beach scene is for the back cover. I know you all are thinking, "Why the hell did she illustrate people at the beach when summer is practically over?!? Is she trying to drive us further into depression?!?". Well, no, I am not. This magazine is published at the University of California - San Diego - where those damn bastards get sunny days all year round. It's okay...I'm not jealous...

So yes, another requirement was it had to be BLACK & WHITE (yet another obvious statement). But I enjoyed working with that limitation. You know what they say, limitations don't cause no heart palpitations! Ahahahhahah...I'm just kidding. So enough with my nonsense...enjoy the art.
